 Agricultural produce assurance guidelines are growing in popularity and are now established for many areas including free range chickens. These guidelines are concerned with animal welfare and readily identified on eggs and dairy products sold in retail outlets. They assure consumers that the eggs have come from chickens reared in accordance with humane practices. So whenever you are making any of the egg dishes presented in this blog, here are a dozen  Free Range Chicken Eggs included in that assurance..

  1. Increased space allowances over legal requirements must be implemented such that exercise and exploration are encouraged.
  2. There must be a sufficient number of feeding troughs and drinkers to avoid competition and bullying. These must always be kept free from contamination and be easily accessible.
  3.  In-feed antibiotics may only be prescribed by a vet for specific diseases.
  4. Producers of both free range and indoor environmentally controlled systems must provide facilities to encourage increased activity and exercise.
  5. Good quality litter must be provided to reduce breast blemishes, foot pad lesions and hock burns.
  6.  Good air quality must be ensured at all times.
  7. Lighting levels, whether natural or artificial, must include a night period.
  8. Birds must be inspected for health issues daily.
  9. Catching and crating methods must avoid stress and injury.
  10. All people handling the birds must be trained and competent to reduce stress and prevent injury.
  11.  Stockmen must control growth rate to prevent leg weakness and heart failure by the implementation of careful management and feeding regimes.
  12. Transportation requirements and handling at the abattoir are specified to reduce stress and injury.
